Whether you are seeking short-term storage during your next holiday or long-term storage during extensive travel, storage for your high-value vehicle goes far beyond concealing it with a protective cover. The vehicle experts at Parc Fermé have compiled a few helpful tips for storing your vehicle in a manner that will protect your investment.
1- Indoor storage is a must, never ever store your vehicle outside. We can’t stress this enough. Even if your vehicle has a cover over it, dampness will gather from below and infiltrate every nook and cranny of the car, to include the interior. This moisture may cause the brakes to rust or other vehicle components behind the dashboard to rust. The last thing you want is to cause damage to your investment due to improper storage.
2- Don’t let the tires rest on the ground, the old practice of putting the car up on blocks no longer applies. Allowing the suspension to hang with no weight on the tires used to be essential in the days of bias ply tires. However, now we know better. Exposing the shiny silver rods inside the shock absorbers, by fully extending them, leaves them susceptible to rust. Rust build up on these rods will destroy the shock absorber seals as soon as the car is let down to normal ride height. For optimal storage, keep your vehicle on the with slight pressure on the tires. At Parc Fermé, we use custom cushions created and tailor made for each vehicle to ensure that they are being stored optimally.
3- Avoid extra tire pressure: There is no need to increase the pressure in your vehicle’s tires to protect it from flat spotting. This simply doesn’t work. In fact, may even prove to be counterproductive resulting in the tire cracking over time. When placing your vehicle in storage in the UAE just be sure that the tires are at their preferred pressure points.
4- Exterior and interior detailing: Before placing your car in storage, you need to get it ready. This starts with thoroughly cleaning your vehicle from the inside out. Avoid using off the shelf chemicals to wash your vehicle, as this can damage the paint and interior furnishings. Use leather conditioning natural creams that are non-chemical based. At Parc Fermé we only use chemicals that are PH neutral and chlorine free. These products are ideal for cleaning your vehicle while protecting its mint condition. Avoid using hand towels to wash your vehicle. Instead, use microfiber towels.
5- Fluids: When you are getting ready to place your car in storage for an extended period of time, be sure to change the oil and fill up the gas tank. At Parc Fermé we will make sure this takes place when you drop off your vehicle for storage. This will prevent moisture from accumulating inside the fuel tank and keep the seals from drying out.
6- Engine care: If you want to keep your personal settings and ensure that your battery starts the moment you return, purchase a battery tender, also known as a trickle charger. This device hooks up to your car battery on one end and plugs into a wall outlet on the other. It delivers just enough electrical power to prevent the battery from discharging so your vehicle is ready to run when you want to take it for a spin. When starting your vehicle after placing it in storage for a period of time, don’t start your engine and rev it. Be sure to let it idle for a while. This gets the oils moving and allows all engine parts to reach optimal temperature.
7- Don’t engage the parking break: It’s usually a good idea to use the parking brake, but don’t do it when you leave a car in storage. If the brake pads make contact with the rotors for too long, there is a chance that they might fuse. Instead, use tire stoppers, also called a chock, to prevent the car from moving.
If you follow these simple steps, your vehicle will be fully protected and ready to run when you decide it’s time to pick it back up.
